Le papier, l'écriture alphabétique et les livres ont débarqué en Amérique dans le sillage des conquistadors. Autant d'armes aux mains des Espagnols pour soumettre et christianiser les vaincus. L'écriture européenne s'abat sur le Nouveau Monde comme une déferlante, bouleversant les sociétés amérindiennes dont les langues ne s'écrivaient pas. Sous toutes ses formes, l'écrit des vainqueurs est l'auxiliaire de la colonisation : les ordres de la métropole sont écrits, les richesses locales sont enregistrées et des livres véhiculent les savoirs venus de l'Europe. Les enfants des élites indigènes, formés aux valeurs de l'humanisme, connaîtront bientôt mieux le latin et la Bible que les croyances de leurs ancêtres. Ils sauront pourtant résister à la colonisation alphabétique grâce à leur extraordinaire créativité. Serge Gruzinski a retrouvé la trace d'Indiens et d'Européens qui ont vécu cette période où, de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, s'amorce l'occidentalisation du monde. Catalogue de l'exposition " L'Invention de l'imprimerie (1450-1520) " présentée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, l'ouvrage retrace les débuts de l'imprimerie. Si Gutenberg est bien présent, c'est une aventure collective qui est racontée, l'une des plus importantes de l'humanité, la mise au point d'une technique au service de la connaissance. Cet ouvrage retrace les premières années de l'imprimerie en Europe. Construit en 3 parties, il raconte d'abord les expérimentations et les tâtonnements du début, lorsque l'impression en typographie côtoie encore la reproduction manuscrite, et que les deux s'entremêlent parfois. Les lettrines, les enluminures sont souvent réalisées à la main sur les premiers livres imprimés. De même les illustrations, collées a posteriori, ou peintes à la main aux endroits laissés vierges, ou encore imprimées en xylographie. Vient ensuite le temps du perfectionnement, où les imprimeurs, qui cherchent notamment à atteindre le degré de raffinement des manuscrits, s'essayent à l'impression en deux, puis en trois et en quatre couleurs. Ils expérimentent aussi la gravure sur métal en relief qui permet d'imprimer en même temps le texte et l'image. Ce bouillonnement d'invention, qui se diffuse par les routes commerciales, se nourrit de multiples échanges et fait ainsi trace de poudre. Les foyers d'impression se multiplient en Allemagne, en Suisse, en France, en Italie... D'abord réservés à une élite - clergé, nobles... -, imprimés en latin et donc exportables dans toute l'Europe, les incunables doivent trouver un autre public à mesure que la technique se perfectionne et devient plus efficace. C'est l'objet de la troisième partie du catalogue, qui présente les imprimés (livres mais aussi placards, lettres d'indulgences, avis, etc.) destinés à un plus grand nombre, utilisant les langues vernaculaires et traitant de sujets de plus en plus larges : livres pour l'apprentissage, livres pratiques, romans, etc. --BNF

Blanks, Print, Space, and Void in English Renaissance Literature is an inquiry into the empty spaces encountered not just on the pages of printed books in c.1500-1700, but in Renaissance culture more generally. The book argues that print culture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries helped to foster the modern idea of the 'gap' (where words, texts, images, and ideas are constructed as missing, lost, withheld, fragmented, or perhaps never devised in thefirst place). It re-imagines how early modern people reacted not just to printed books and documents of many different kinds, but also how the very idea of emptiness or absence began to be fashioned in a way which still surrounds us.Jonathan Sawday leads the reader through the entire landscape of early modern print culture, discussing topics such as: space and silence; the exploration of the vacuum; the ways in which race and racial identity in early modern England were constructed by the language and technology of print; blackness and whiteness, together with lightness, darkness, and sightlessness; cartography and emptiness; the effect of typography on reading practices; the social spaces of the page; gendered surfaces; hierarchies of information; books of memory; pages constructed as waste or vacant; the genesis of blank forms and early modern bureaucracy; the political and devotional spaces of printed books; the impact of censorship; and the problem posed by texts which lack endings or conclusions. The book itselfends by dwelling on blank or empty pages as a sign of human mortality. Sawday pays close attention to the writings of many of the familiar figures in English Renaissance literary culture - Sidney, Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, and Milton, for example - as well as introducing readers to a host of lesser-known figures. The book also discusses the work of numerous women writers from the period, including Aphra Behn, Ann Bradstreet, Margaret Cavendish, Lady Jane Gray, Lucy Hutchinson, ÆmeliaLanyer, Isabella Whitney, and Lady Mary Wroth.

Examining hundreds of early printed books containing works by Chaucer, the 'father' of English poetry, and his much-maligned follower, John Lydgate. She demonstrates that the shift from manuscript to print was part of the controversial process by which Chaucer earned his exclusive place in English literary history.
